I don’t remember exactly when it was that I first heard the smokey voice of Ms. Etta James, but it was at a very young age. Being from a southern based family, the blues, soul and rock and roll by African American artists were all I heard. It was in my DNA. As I got older and entered High School and began to look for others who shared my tastes in music, I found it quite difficult, many of my peer were not even aware of who Etta James was, what her songs were, not even an understanding of the genre and meaning behind her career accomplishments. I felt like I was on an island all by myself with no one to share this gift of music with.
